The chief instructor at Corvallis Aikikai is Joe Canon. He has been training in Aikido for over 18 years. Joe has a rank of sandan (3rd degree black belt) in Aikido and a fukushidoin teaching certificate from Birankai North America. He has been teaching adults and children since 2004.

Joe, and all adult members of Corvallis Aikikai are members of Birankai North America. This organization is headed by Chiba Sensei, 8th dan, Shihan, founder of San Deigo Aikikai. Chiba Sensei is a direct student of the founder of Aikido, Morhei Ueshiba, O-Sensei.

Joe's teacher is Thoms Sensei, the chief instructor of Eugene Aikikai in Eugene Oregon, under whom Joe has studied since 1994. He started studying Aikido in 1990 under Goggin Sensei in Boulder City, NV.
